(September 20, 2019) ATLANTA, GA –General contractor Winter Construction has announced it is relocating from downtown Atlanta to a former industrial building in Chamblee, Georgia. Winter is at work renovating the building and expects to occupy its new headquarters in February of 2020.

Winter Construction is a leading general contractor in the Southeast and was recently named to the national Top 400 contractors list by Engineering News Record. “We are excited to be building our new HQ,” said Winter CEO Brent Reid. “We love doing adaptive re-use projects, and it’s great fun to create a space that suits us. We believe the Chamblee location will propel us into our next phase of growth.”

A joint venture between MidCity Real Estate Partners and Anchor Capital Partners acquired the 42,500 square-foot building in downtown Chamblee in August. “MidCity and Anchor have been great partners in our relocation,” Reid said.

Plans for the building renovation include reducing its footprint and creating more office space for tenants in addition to Winter. Winter will install all new base building features and new tenant interiors.

The building is located at the northeast corner of Peachtree Road and North Peachtree Road in downtown Chamblee. The location is one block from the planned Chamblee Town Center and a half-mile southwest of the Assembly Yards mixed-use project.

(August 19, 2019) ATLANTA, GA – Winter Construction has begun the renovation of Joseph Humphries Elementary School, a school in the South Atlanta cluster of Atlanta Public Schools. Winter will build a new addition for the school and upgrade the existing building’s roof, electrical, and plumbing systems, as well as making many other improvements.

Winter’s renovation and addition will provide 62,497 square feet of updated educational space. The new addition is 10,400 square feet, and it will feature a STEM lab as well as six new classrooms and new administrative offices. Winter will also update the storm and sanitary drainage on the school grounds, which will include installing an underground stormwater detention basin.

Carrie Campbell, Director of Operations for Winter, said, “We’re honored to be selected for this renovation and addition. The job is special to us because in past years we built an addition at Humphries Elementary, and we have completed projects at the high school and the middle school in Atlanta Public Schools’ South Atlanta cluster.”

(April 2, 2019) ATLANTA, GA – Construction management firm Winter Johnson Group welcomed a new intern at its Fulton County Central Library job site. John Maxwell is a senior at Grady High School and a participant in Atlanta Public Schools’ Work-Based Learning Youth Apprenticeship Program.

Maxwell’s work at the job site will require him to learn foundational safety procedures, as well as assist the project team with rough carpentry and logistical set-ups. He will shadow the Winter Johnson Group team until the project is complete in 2020.

The Atlanta Public Schools (APS) Work-Based Learning program bridges the gap between theory and practice through a variety of hands-on career development experiences and opportunities. Students gain valuable industry insights to compliment classroom learning for college preparedness and career readiness.

Richard Elder is a Work-Based Learning coordinator for APS. “Mr. Elder has been a great partner for us in getting our intern set up for success at the job site,” said Sarah McCracken, Project Executive for the Winter Johnson Group.

Maxwell’s internship job site is the design-build renovation of the renowned Fulton County Central Library. The project includes interior demolition with replacement of all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, and installation of a skylight and eight-story atrium. Exterior renovations include a new entry plaza and loading dock. Maxwell’s exposure to this complex project will enable him to lay the groundwork for a thriving career in construction.

(January 25, 2019) ATLANTA, GA – Winter Construction has completed two new, innovative hotels in Georgia: the 11-story AC Hotel and Moxy Hotel in midtown Atlanta, and the seven-story Alida Hotel in Savannah’s historic district. Both projects represent market innovations in hospitality and Winter’s growing resumé of unique hotels.

The AC Hotel and Moxy Hotel is a dual-branded hotel by Marriott. The Moxy is debuting in Georgia and designed for millennials, and the AC Hotel is Marriott’s European-inspired offering. The AC and Moxy, located in midtown Atlanta’s booming technology and arts district, have distinct entrances and separate elevators and floors, with a shared common floor that includes a pool, fitness center, bar, and business center. The project’s location on a tight city block with overhead power lines required extreme planning for all deliveries, hoisting, access, staging for building skin activities, and all exterior work. Winter also built the four-story, cast-in-place parking deck that supports the building.

The Alida Hotel is a new seven-story, 173-key hotel in the historic River Street area of Savannah, and is a Marriott Tribute Portfolio hotel. The Alida’s brick façade blends with its historic surroundings, and the hotel’s interior features original art and residential furnishings, along with very modern amenities such as a 24-hour fitness room. The hotel also offers fine dining, a lobby bar, a rooftop bar, and a pool with bar and cabanas.

(October 16, 2018) ATLANTA, GA –Winter Companies, a general and environmental contractor based in Atlanta, hosted its 15th Annual Golf Tournament benefitting Special Olympics Georgia (SOGA) last week. The event raised a total of $61,000 for the organization.

Winter Companies employees, subcontractors, and other vendors competed at Cherokee Town & Country Club in order to support and raise funds for SOGA. The funds raised at the event will help to serve tens of thousands of children and adults with intellectual disabilities throughout the state of Georgia.

Winter gained the greatest amount of sponsor support in the tournament’s history this year. Eighty sponsors contributed to the event, and a total of 200 golfers participated in the tournament.

“I want to thank everyone for supporting this great cause. We’ve had a record number of sponsors this year, and that reflects the importance of supporting an organization like Special Olympics Georgia and the great work they do,” said Brent Reid, President and CEO of Winter.

(October 3, 2018) ATLANTA, GA – Winter SPACES, a division of Winter Construction, will begin mobilization this month to renovate common areas at The Tower at Piedmont Center, Building 15, in Buckhead. The work will update about 8,000 square feet, and will add additional access to surrounding walkable amenities via a new pedestrian bridge connecting the building to Old Ivy Road.

Piedmont Center is a united, nine-building office campus connecting three diverse workplace neighborhoods — the Commons, the Fountains, and the Tower. The campus offers a natural progression for dynamic start-ups and established professionals to join a progressive workplace that nourishes creative interactions through active social spaces including a bocce ball court and outdoor work areas. Winter SPACES’ work at the Tower will update shared public areas, install a canopy at the building’s entrance, add a glass vestibule in the parking garage, and refresh the lobby.

Winter SPACES’ renovation at the Tower will be its fourth project at the Piedmont Center. In prior efforts, SPACES has installed outdoor shade structures at the Fountains, added accessibility ramps, and renovated the courtyard at the Commons. The current renovation is the continuation of a relationship between SPACES and the Ardent Companies, the local ownership team dedicated to unifying Piedmont Center as a newly connected community.

Smallwood, Reynolds, Stewart, Stewart is the architect of record for the project. The project is expected to be complete in about five months.

(July 23, 2018) EAST POINT, GA – Winter Johnson Group recently celebrated reaching the highest point, literally, of the new City of East Point City Hall in growing East Point, GA. At 31,700 square feet, the new multi-story City Hall will sit adjacent to the original historic building.

Mayor Deana Holiday Ingraham, as well as representatives from East Point’s City Council and the City Manager’s Office, joined the Winter Johnson Group team at the project site on July 13, 2018, to enjoy a meal together and observe the progress of the new City Hall.

Mayor Ingraham emphasized the city’s vision for a new home for the City Hall being realized. “Working together as a community, we make dreams come true. This has been a dream for a while, and now we are actually going to be able to see the reality of this dream manifest and come to life. The new City Hall will be a community building for all to enjoy.”

(July 17, 2018) ATLANTA, GA – The Martin Luther King, Jr. Recreation & Aquatic Center, a design-build by Winter Johnson FS360, has earned the coveted LEED Gold rating from the U.S. Green Building Council. The project also received an Award of Excellence from the Atlanta Urban Design Commission.

LEED status (an acronym for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) requires not only energy-efficient design, but low-impact construction practices that reduce waste and depend on local sources for building materials. LEED Gold is one of the highest sustainability ratings.

Winter Johnson FS360 built the Martin Luther King, Jr. Recreation & Aquatic Center for the City of Atlanta, which is known for its sustainability initiatives. Atlanta passed an ordinance in 2003 requiring all new city construction and major renovations to be LEED certified. The City later passed an energy usage benchmarking and disclosure policy for commercial building, which aims to reduce commercial energy consumption in the City by 20 percent by the year 2030.

Winter Johnson FS360 is a joint venture of Winter Construction, Johnson Construction Services, and FS360. The new Recreation & Aquatic Center’s green features include:

• Low-flow plumbing fixtures
• Local and recycled materials

The Atlanta Urban Design Commission awarded the project the Award of Excellence in the category of Interior Design of Public Space. The Commission’s awards “honor those projects that have significantly contributed toward the enhancement of the City of Atlanta’s built environment, the preservation of our physical heritage, and the sympathetic balance between the old and the new.”

The architecture firms KAI Design & Build and Perkins + Will designed the Martin Luther King, Jr. Recreation & Aquatic Center.

The new Recreation & Aquatic Center offers state-of-the-art recreation facilities. Its features include:

• A zero-entry family-fun pool with play equipment features and a distinct area with lap-swimming lanes
• A basketball gymnasium with six goals and flexibility for other hard-court sports
• An elevated running/walking track overlooking the gymnasium and pool
• A climbing wall
• An outdoor terrace
• Multiple community and meeting rooms
• A senior center
• Group fitness areas
• A computer room

The new Recreation and Aquatic Center is located adjacent to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Historic District, and its façade features a monumental portrait of Dr. King.

(July 13, 2018) ATLANTA – The Winter Johnson Group achieved a milestone at its Grant Park Gateway project for the City of Atlanta with the completion of excavation and the construction of a stabilized earthen wall for the partially below-grade parking garage.

Instead of holding the usual “topping out” celebration for a typical building, the Winter Johnson Group threw a “bottoming out” party on Friday, June 29, to celebrate the conclusion of excavation. Winter Johnson moved 102,000 cubic feet of dirt for the project. The earthen wall is 593 feet long, and 40 feet tall.

The Winter Johnson Group leads the project as design-builder, with Smith Dalia Architects as architect of record. Winter Johnson is a joint venture between Winter Construction and Johnson Construction Services.

The Grant Park Gateway will itself be a destination within Grant Park. Some key features of the Grant Park Gateway are:

• A smart parking system that guides patrons to available spaces
• Parking areas for both automobiles and bicycles, as well as Electric Vehicle Charging Stations
• Amenities including expanded green space, a restaurant, a shade structure, a shaded terrace plaza, amazing views of downtown, terraced seating, a water feature, and a pedestrian overpass

Winter Construction received an Award of Safety Excellence for exceptional safety performance in 2017 and Awards of Merit for two projects: Alan Pope High School and the Solis Hotel at Two Porsche Drive. Winter and its joint venture partners, Johnson Construction and FS360, received an Award of Merit for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Recreation & Aquatic Center, built for the City of Atlanta.

ABC’s Excellence in Construction program highlights the innovation, quality, and vision of a project’s entire construction team—general and specialty contractors, architects, engineers, owners, and others. Entries were evaluated on criteria such as complexity, attractiveness, safety, unusual challenges, completion time, workmanship, innovation, and budget.

The association’s safety awards are presented annually to Georgia contractors who have had low rates of on-the-job injuries and who have demonstrated the highest commitment to safety and safety training.

Winter’s construction of the Solis Hotel won the Award of Merit in the category of commercial projects valued between $25 and $50 million. The eight-story Solis Hotel has 214 guest rooms and provides visitors with easy access to Porsche’s North American headquarters and views of landings and take-offs at Atlanta’s international airport. Winter delivered the hotel as a design-build with HOK Architecture as architect of record.

Winter Construction also won an Award of Merit for Alan Pope High School in the category of institutional projects valued between $15 and $25 million. Winter completed a phased renovation and addition at the Cobb County school, including the addition of an 84,000 square-foot gymnasium and theater.
