Winter carried out a 45,000 square-foot restoration and renovation in one of the oldest skyscrapers in the United States. The renewed building provides flexible, high-tech office space for entrepreneurs, corporations, and academia.

The scope of work included roof and elevator replacement, exterior waterproofing, asbestos abatement, installation of new mechanical systems, and other renovations to the interior spaces.

The renovation work uncovered unique elements of this early steel frame structure, built in 1897 in downtown Atlanta.

Winter restored the 18,681 square-foot historic sanctuary as part of a two-phase project. A major aspect of the sanctuary restoration involved returning the chancel floor to a level plane. The floor tile, which dates back to the church’s original construction in 1906, was saved and reinstalled. Winter also completely gutted the floor, walls and ceiling of the 20,321 square-foot undercroft of the sanctuary; poured new concrete slab; and built new church offices, choir dressing rooms, and new space for Sunday school classes. Despite unforeseen structural issues, Winter was able to complete the restoration of the sanctuary in time to accommodate the upcoming Christmas services. Winter managed the asbestos abatement of the sanctuary and an adjacent building on the property before it was demolished. Phase II of the project, the addition of a new 90-foot concrete frame, gothic-style bell tower, was constructed to blend in with the church’s refurbished brick facade and terra cotta finishes. The bells were shipped from Eskrieg, England. This project received an “Excellence in Construction Award” from the Georgia Associated Builders and Contractors.

Winter renovated the historic, four-level high school that was originally constructed in 1938. Renovation work was also performed on a building addition that was constructed in 1968. The school was reconfigured to bring its facilities up to date, and a 60,000 square-foot addition was also built. The project originally included the renovation of the 1968 gymnasium addition. During the course of the renovation work, it was determined by the design engineer that the building was structurally unsafe, so the Winter team demolished this structure and built a new gymnasium facility.

Winter managed the construction of 40,000 square feet of new space and renovated 53,400 square feet of the historic building. The project also included construction of a 65,235 square-foot, two-level, below-grade parking deck.

The newly constructed space includes a new social hall and day care/education facility with a full service kitchen, a media center, restroom facilities, and a ballroom with several folding partition walls for flexible space configuration. The renovation/restoration work included restoring the exterior brick, limestone, and stucco to its original condition, replicating the cast stone for the new construction to duplicate the existing cornices and colonnades and restoring the cupola. Winter managed the re-leading of the stained glass windows and restoration of the decorative plaster roping within the original sanctuary. The Winter project team worked diligently to exceed the owner’s schedule expectations and achieved occupancy certification ten days before contractually obligated.

Winter Construction converted an old, historic warehouse into a multifamily apartment building.

The 122,000 square-foot building in Charlotte’s historic arts and entertainment district, NoDa (short for North Davidson), features one- and two-bedroom loft apartments with 10 to 28-foot ceilings. NoDa shares the same geography as Historic North Charlotte which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The amenities in the historic building include high-speed internet, a salt-water swimming pool, an on-site restaurant/brewery, access gates, bike racks, community atrium with Wi-Fi, fire pit, a fitness center, and many more.
