Winter built the new John H. Harland Boys and Girls Club to replace the existing facility directly adjacent.

The new 25,000 square-foot, two-story steel structure building is an arts- and innovation-centered hub for youth, helping to enrich the lives of more than 200 kids and teens each day.

The Club, called TIES for short (an acronym of The Innovation and Expression Studio) will offer spaces for visual, performing, and culinary arts. The Club includes a pre-engineered gymnasium and dance studio, dining area, culinary arts kitchen, 2D/3D arts studio with a kiln, gallery and maker spaces, offices, a loft area with a small cafe, and lab spaces for design, tech, music production, and film and video.

The exterior consists of corrugated metal panels, brick veneer, insulated metal panels, and aluminum composite panels. The structure features standing seam metal roofing with a modified bitumen roofing system. Site work includes a new storm damage drainage system, detention pond, 49-space parking lot, ornamental fencing, concrete sidewalks, and a planned culinary garden.

Winter expanded the soccer field at Atlanta International School (AIS), added a competition oval, and performed extensive site renovation to reconfigure parking areas and a playground. AIS is a private school in the historic Garden Hills District of Atlanta, with competitive soccer teams and track-and-field teams. AIS acquired land for additional parking and for reconfiguration of its playing fields. Winter performed demolition and renovation of various separate areas of the campus while the campus remained occupied. Winter built several retaining walls for the reconfigured site and installed extensive underground stormwater detention systems.

Upon its opening, Scaly, Slimy, Spectacular! became the premiere reptile and amphibian exhibit in the United States.

Featuring a state of the art 113,000 square-foot facility, including the main reptile complex (15,000 square feet), restroom facilities, theatre, Georgia river pond, and playground, the complex welcomed in some of the most endangered and rare reptile and amphibian species in the world.

The main reptile complex structure includes a unique exterior sloped curtain-wall glazing system with a custom frit pattern to allow for natural light to enhance the innate habitat for the exhibits. Interior exhibit elements include a system of custom murals, replicated rockwork, and life support systems specializing in ensuring the animals sustain a safe and natural habitat.

This addition to Zoo Atlanta’s giraffe exhibit has transformed visitors’ animal-viewing experience. At the Twiga Terrace, Zoo patrons are able to interact with the giraffes via a 350 square-foot peninsula that extends out into the actual exhibit. The design of the platform allows the giraffes to walk up to the railing and have visitors feed them. For those who don’t wish to feed the animals, the peninsula also provides a 360-degree view of the giraffe habitat.

For the demolition and reconstruction of this 8,000-seat stadium, Winter was able to save Atlanta Public Schools approximately $1 million by recommending material substitutions that still met the performance criteria. Examples included redesigning the pressbox to be consistent yet still larger than other press boxes in the State of Georgia, and relocating site utilities to more efficiently utilize existing conditions. Lakewood Stadium is the largest in the Atlanta Public Schools’ athletic system. In addition to concessions, restrooms, athletic offices, locker rooms, training facilities, and storage areas, the stadium includes a new “jumbo-tron” scoreboard and speaker system. The project is LEED® Silver Certified.

This addition to Decatur High School included a 100,000 square-foot phased addition/expansion project that required both the design and construction of a total of eight buildings.

The initial phase included six new buildings at the new stadium, in addition to a synthetic turf field and detention system. The second phase incorporated the build back of a new gymnasium and a new arts building, which included a theater, gymnasium, locker rooms, classrooms, and associated athletics department staff offices.

Phase 1 of the development involved the demolition of the existing football stadium and gymnasium building, as well as the construction of the new synthetic turf field and stadium complex with an overall seating capacity of 3,500. This phase was completed on a fast track schedule in order to open for use by the school for the fall of 2008. All demolition and construction of the new field, including all restroom, concession, and ticket booth buildings, were completed in six months.

The Birmingham Crossplex is a state-of-the-art indoor track and field facility and Olympic size pool that is used primarily for competition purposes. Other areas of the building include aluminum bleacher grandstands, warm-up areas, locker rooms, concession areas, VIP suites, meeting space, and press boxes. The 220,000 square-foot building is a structural steel and masonry building with veneer, including brick, split-face CMU, ground-face CMU, glazed CMU, rockcast, architectural pre-cast panels, storefront, curtain wall, and aluminum canopies. Interior finishes of the facility include mondo rubber floor system, epoxy flooring, ground/polished/dyed concrete, ceramic tile, quarry tile, carpet, VCT, and rubber base.

The police precinct is a 5,000 square-foot structure with various offices, interview rooms, a break room, locker and restrooms, an intoximeter room, evidence and ammo rooms, and a roll call room.

The exterior wall construction is load-bearing concrete block with brick veneer. The roof system is a single-ply, mechanically attached membrane over 3” rigid insulation placed on steel deck and structural bar joists.
