This renovation marks the entry of the nationally branded Cristo Rey High School into the Atlanta market. Cristo Rey High School serves low-income students by giving them a college-prep education and work experience in a corporate office.

The 39,000 square-foot building was the former location of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Atlanta headquarters and is located in the heart of Midtown, close to Marta transportation for easy accessibility.

The scope of work included demolition, abatement, and build-out of the building’s second floor, including 20 classrooms, a cafeteria, worship center, exercise room, locker rooms, and administrative offices. Sound walls were built throughout the space, and the mechanical and electrical systems were reconstructed to serve the new layout. New modern, code-compliant restroom stacks were added to each floor to accommodate the student body, and exit stairs were all brought up to code. The old VAT floor was first encapsulated and then covered with new flooring. All work was completed on a fast tracked schedule to open the school in time for the new school year.

Winter restored the 18,681 square-foot historic sanctuary as part of a two-phase project. A major aspect of the sanctuary restoration involved returning the chancel floor to a level plane. The floor tile, which dates back to the church’s original construction in 1906, was saved and reinstalled. Winter also completely gutted the floor, walls and ceiling of the 20,321 square-foot undercroft of the sanctuary; poured new concrete slab; and built new church offices, choir dressing rooms, and new space for Sunday school classes. Despite unforeseen structural issues, Winter was able to complete the restoration of the sanctuary in time to accommodate the upcoming Christmas services. Winter managed the asbestos abatement of the sanctuary and an adjacent building on the property before it was demolished. Phase II of the project, the addition of a new 90-foot concrete frame, gothic-style bell tower, was constructed to blend in with the church’s refurbished brick facade and terra cotta finishes. The bells were shipped from Eskrieg, England. This project received an “Excellence in Construction Award” from the Georgia Associated Builders and Contractors.

Winter completed Phase I for Prince of Peace on a 68-acre wooded site. Winter managed the project on an accelerated, fast-track schedule that began with extensive preconstruction services. The new 56,324 square foot addition to the existing church campus includes a sanctuary, an educational wing, a full-service kitchen and a narthex. Winter provided value analysis services that resulted in a suggested $800,000 in value engineering alternates of which approximately 80% were accepted by Catholic Construction Services.

Winter served as general contractor for the full renovation and interior build-out of the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Atlanta. Winter installed new systems along with all new finishes in the four-floor facility. Winter installed a new roof, new site lighting package, covered walkways, and other site improvements. The new facility features multiple conference rooms, an employee cafeteria, climate controlled archive storage, and a full chapel for events.

Winter managed the construction of 40,000 square feet of new space and renovated 53,400 square feet of the historic building. The project also included construction of a 65,235 square-foot, two-level, below-grade parking deck.

The newly constructed space includes a new social hall and day care/education facility with a full service kitchen, a media center, restroom facilities, and a ballroom with several folding partition walls for flexible space configuration. The renovation/restoration work included restoring the exterior brick, limestone, and stucco to its original condition, replicating the cast stone for the new construction to duplicate the existing cornices and colonnades and restoring the cupola. Winter managed the re-leading of the stained glass windows and restoration of the decorative plaster roping within the original sanctuary. The Winter project team worked diligently to exceed the owner’s schedule expectations and achieved occupancy certification ten days before contractually obligated.
