Laura Prosser, Winter Construction’s newest drone pilot.

Project Engineer Laura Prosser recently joined the Construction Technology team at Winter Construction. She is a terrific fit for our department, and proved it by passing the Federal Aviation Administration’s test for remote pilot licensing within her first few weeks on the team. And that’s not an easy test.

Our team’s ability to operate unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) allows us to gather information about our projects much more thoroughly than in the past. We can generate imagery and data more frequently and at much lower cost than with traditional aerial photography. In Laura’s first project on the team, the construction of a 12-story hotel in Atlanta, she will be replacing the usual jobsite camera with a drone full time for aerial photography, inspections, progress photos, and photogrammetry—just to start. Laura will also use state-of-the-art platforms for modeling and coordinating the project, and for document management, quality control, material tracking, and punch list.

Because of the close proximity of structures adjacent to the site, we performed laser scanning, photogrammetry studies, and 4D simulation of foundations and underground work before the first shovel hit the ground. In all of Winter’s projects, we assess the Construction Technology needs prior to starting, and we define the potential challenges and opportunities specific to each job. We support the project management team throughout all stages of construction through the innovative use of methods ranging from 3D and 4D models to virtual reality.

We hope you enjoy hearing Laura’s story in this short video

(June 17, 2016) ATLANTA, GA – Winter Construction is building upon its commitment to deliver good experiences by expanding the Building Information Modeling (BIM) services with the addition of two key hires: David Epps, Director of Construction Technology, and Christopher Baierl, BIM Manager. These two additions to Winter will oversee all BIM and related Construction Technology impacting the Design, Preconstruction, Operations, and Facilities Management aspects of Winter Construction.

The Director of Construction Technology is a new role at Winter Construction. We created this position to bring more emphasis to the role of technology throughout the entire construction process from beginning to end, integrating it across all departments and functions.

David Epps graduated with a degree in Construction Management from the University of Florida and brings nearly 20 years of experience in the construction industry, 13 of which have been focused on BIM and leveraging technology to enhance the art and science of construction on more than 200 projects on and off the jobsite. Previously with Holder Construction Company, David is leading the Construction Technology team at Winter Construction, which is dedicated to strengthening and expanding our use of innovative hardware, software, and processes to enhance quality, foster more efficiency, and provide a better quality product to our clients and project teams.

David is passionate about technology and using it to improve communication and enrich the understanding of jobs through integration into every stage of all construction projects at Winter. He plays an integral role in our Construction Technology vision, departmental and company training, recruiting, R&D, and the continual development and refinement of company and industry BIM standards and processes. He is looking forward to incorporating the constantly evolving landscape of hardware and software technology – including BIM/ Virtual Design Construction (VDC), laser scanning, 4D Simulations, Drone / Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Photography and Quality Control, Field Integration through mobile tools, 3D Printing, Augmented / Virtual Reality, among other innovations – into projects at Winter Construction. He is an active member of BIMForum Leadership, Autodesk construction advisory committees, and many other local and national BIM- and VDC-focused industry groups. He has been a highly acclaimed speaker and presenter at Autodesk University, BIMForum, ENR FutureTech, Revit Technology Conference, Hexagon, several colleges, and many other groups and advisory committees since 2005.

Also joining the Construction Technology team is Christopher Baierl, who worked with David for eight years at Holder Construction. He earned his Bachelor of Science from Purdue University majoring in Computer Graphics Technology and is a seasoned BIM professional. Christopher will manage BIM services and promote technology and graphics solutions for all Winter Construction projects. With extensive experience in the Data & Technology and Corporate Office sectors, Christopher has influenced all phases of projects from pursuit through facility management. Well versed in building coordination, model authoring, and visual graphic creation, Christopher brings industry experience that provides immediate benefit to the project teams and clients of Winter Construction.

With these highly qualified additions to the team, Winter Construction will leverage all aspects of Construction Technology and innovative practices to plan smarter and build better and more efficiently. Winter will generate more accurate conceptual and preconstruction cost and quantity information, identify and solve problems earlier, coordinate our projects to eliminate time- consuming errors and rework, and set the project up for success. With seamless coordination, collaboration, and communication of project timelines, Winter’s clients and end-users will be able to maintain effective building systems. Says Andy Rogers, VP of Preconstruction, “Making a serious investment in Construction Technology enables us to optimize resources, schedules, results, and continue to provide good experiences to our clients and partners.”
